Proof of English language Proficiency to enter Academic Programmes

If you are not a first-language speaker of English, we require evidence of your English language proficiency. Evidence, such as test results, must not be more than two years old.

Evidence of your English language proficiency can be:

  • Achievement of NCEA level 3 and has met New Zealand university entrance requirements; or

  • Completion of a Bachelor Degree, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Bachelor Honours Degree, Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree with English as the language of instruction, from tertiary education providers from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States; or
  • Obtaining the Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) or the Trinity College London Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Cert TESOL); or
  • A satisfactory result in an approved English language test, such as:
    • International English Language Testing System (IELTS – Academic)
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
    • Cambridge English Test
    • Pearson Test of English (Academic) – PTE
    • New Zealand Certificate in English Language (NZCEL)
    • LanguageCert 
    • Occupational English Test (OET) 

IELTS

The minimum performance levels for admission are:

  • Postgraduate Diploma: 6.5 overall with no sub score less than 6.0
  • Graduate Diploma, Bachelor and Level 6 Diploma: 6.0 overall with no sub score less than 5.5
  • Level 5 Diploma: 5.5 overall with no sub score less than 5.0 

TOEFL Internet-Based Test (iBT)

The minimum performance levels for admission are:

  • Postgraduate: Score of 79 (with a writing score of 21)
  • Graduate Diploma, Bachelor and Level 6 Diploma: Score of 60 (with a writing score of 20)
  • Level 5 Diploma: Score of 46 (with a writing score of 20) 

Cambridge English Test

The minimum performance levels for admission are:

  • Postgraduate Diploma: FCE with a pass at Grade A or CAE with a score of 58 or CPE with a score of 45
  • Graduate Diploma, Bachelor and Level 6 Diploma:
    • FCE with a pass at Grade B or
  • CAE with a score of 52 Level 5 Diploma:
    • FCE with a pass at Grade C or CAE with a score of 47 

Pearson Test of English (Academic) – PTE

The minimum performance levels for admission are:

  • Postgraduate Diploma: PToE (Academic) score of 58
  • Graduate Diploma, Bachelor and Level 6 Diploma: PToE (Academic) score of 50
  • Level 5 Diploma: PToE (Academic) score of 42  

New Zealand Certificate in English Language (NZCEL)

The minimum performance levels for admission are:

  • Postgraduate Diploma: Level 5 with the Academic endorsement
  • Graduate Diploma, Bachelor and Level 6 Diploma: Level 4 with the Academic endorsement
  • Level 5 Diploma: Level 4 with the Academic endorsement
