Chief Executive​

Chris Gosling is Chief Executive of Whitireia Community Polytechnic and the Wellington Institute of Technology. He was previously Deputy Chief Executive (Operations) at Whitireia, a position he held for three years. He has worked in the Middle East setting up and operating a polytechnic in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Chris is the former Corporate Services Director at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT). This role followed several years in finance and senior management roles in local government in New Zealand.

He is a Chartered Accountant with membership of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and a Board member of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce.

Mark Hewitson

Mark Hewitson was the CFO at Charles Darwin University in Australia and a member of the senior management team. He has worked in senior finance roles in New Zealand and prior to this in the UK. Mark also has an academic background having lectured in accountancy at Massey University. He is a Chartered Accountant and has an MBA from Massey.

Ruth Anderson

Ruth Anderson was the Acting Director at Health Workforce New Zealand and previously held the role of Director, Fellowship Relations and New Zealand Manager with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. She has also held senior government and academic roles. Ruth holds a PhD in education (University of Melbourne).​

Mark Johnston was the CEO of Retail New Zealand. He has over 25 years international retail, commercial and transformational change management experience in a variety of competitive and dynamic blue-chip environments. Mark has a BA (Hons) in Business Organisation and a PGDip in Management Studies.

Leanne Ivil

Director Strategy, Performance & Improvement

Leanne Ivil has a PhD in Economics from Massey University. She was previously with Victoria University of Wellington where she was responsible for academic quality assurance and academic governance. She has worked as Chief Advisor on the Institute of Technology and Polytechnics team at the Tertiary Education Commission and prior to this held senior policy management roles with the Auckland Council.

Mark was Director Human Resources with WelTec from 2007, where he was responsible for WelTec’s human resources strategy and change management as well as human resources operations and capability development. With more than 25 years’ experience in human resources, line management, and development roles, Mark has worked in a wide range of organisations covering the not-for-profit, government, state-owned enterprises, and education sectors. Mark has a BA (Victoria University of Wellington), Diploma of Education (Canterbury) and Diploma in Youth and Development (Commonwealth Youth Programme – Asia-Pacific Centre). He is a member of the Human Resources Institute of New Zealand.

Helen Gardiner

Director Learner Journey

Helen Gardiner's interest and passion in education and its transformative power has been with her since her first teaching role at Porirua College. Her experience across the secondary and tertiary environment, particularly in foundation education, means that Helen can support and enhance the learner journey, from first engagement to successful outcome. Helen has also undertaken roles in international education and training in Cambodia, the Cook Islands, Indonesia and Hong Kong. As a former Dean of Faculty at Whitireia, Helen brings extensive organisational management experience and knowledge, along with close involvement with WelTec through the Māori and Pasifika Trades Training Consortium and the Wellington Trades Academy. Helen holds a Bachelor of Arts (Social Science) and a Diploma in Teaching.

Victoria Spackman

Victoria Spackman has more than 15 years’ experience in the creative sector as a CEO, lawyer, board member, chair and creative practitioner with high-profile New Zealand and Australian businesses and organisations, including the Gibson Group, Bats Theatre, SPADA, Screenrights, and South Pacific Pictures. She is recognised as a leader in the creative sector and in 2012 was awarded the prestigious Private Sector In-House Lawyer of the Year Award by the New Zealand Law Society. In 2015 she won the national Women of Influence Arts and Culture award. Her ONZM was conferred in June 2016 on the occasion of the Queen’s 90th Birthday. She holds a BA, LLB and PostGrad Diploma in Arts in theatre, film, law, linguistics and modern languages.

Carmel Haggerty

Chair of Heads of Schools Management Team (rotating position)

Carmel Haggerty has worked in the Health sector for 40 years. She is a registered nurse with experience in a variety of setting, but specialised in inpatient Mental Health nursing. Carmel has been engaged with health education since 1996 and has during that time worked with new graduate nurses during their first year of practice undertaking Postgraduate qualification, through to working volunteer Paramedics undertaking a Degree in Health Science (Paramedic). Carmel’s research interests have largely been in the areas of new graduate practice (in particular preceptorship and its effectiveness) and eLearning in health education.

She holds a MA (Applied with Merit) in Nursing (VUW) and a Master of Online Education (University of Southern Queensland – USQ).
